Discussing what the U.S. trade war means for Canada, both now and in the future

The “America First” approach of the new Trump administration has already dramatically altered U.S. trade policy. Despite our status as a long-standing ally and major trade partner, Canada has been targeted in the first wave of tariffs. Being the canary in the coal mine is bewildering, especially since Trump himself signed the existing CUSMA deal. The on-again-off-again nature of the tariffs makes it more difficult to develop a strong and sound economic response, especially for businesses without the resources to quickly insulate their supply chains.

Join us at The Walrus Talks at Home: Tariffs to discuss what the upending of Canada’s largest trade relationship might mean. Which sectors will be most impacted by the brewing trade war? How will manufacturing, which sometimes requires 4-6 border crossings per product, adapt to the new environment? How can small and medium-sized businesses – the backbone of Canada’s economy – survive in a shrinking global market? How will supply chains be affected, and what does that mean for the cost of living?

With nearly four more years before the next U.S. election, Canada may be in the teeth of a very long trade war. Join us to discuss what “elbows up” means for Canadian consumers and businesses.
