A death investigation is underway in Edgar County, with that death apparently the result of the hit-and-run striking of a pedestrian.

Dead is Dakota J. Gibson, 34, of Paris.

Edgar County Coroner Scott Barrett said a 911 call came in at 8:27 p.m. Saturday. In that call, a woman said she was traveling on East 1200 County Road north of Paris when she came upon a body in the road.

The Edgar County Sheriff’s Department responded, with Illinois State Police and the Edgar County Coroner’s Office called for assistance. Gibson was pronounced dead at the scene.

Evidence shows Gibson was walking on East 1200 about a mile east of Illinois 1 when a vehicle struck him from behind, the coroner said in a news release. The vehicle left the scene.

An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon. The incident remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Edgar County Sheriff’s Department at 217-465-4166
