The Houston Texans had another successful regular season in 2024, winning the AFC South once again.

However, the team was unable to go as far as they wanted to in the postseason, getting knocked out in the divisional round by the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Texans were busy in free agency, adding multiple players on both sides of the ball who could immediately contribute. Now, the team will try to add some more quality players in the 2025 NFL Draft in a bid to go even further in 2025.

While the team should be able to land an impact player with the No. 25 pick, there are a few players the team would be wise to stay away from. Let’s identify those players today.

Omarion Hampton, RB, North Carolina

Omarion Hampton is an intriguing prospect who has been getting some serious first-round buzz of late. In fact, it’s entirely possible the North Carolina product isn’t even available when the Texans get on the clock.

However, even if Hampton is available, the Texans would be wise to avoid the talented running back. Yes, Hampton has elite traits and produced like star in college, but the Texans have much more pressing needs than running back.

Joe Mixon is a perfectly fine lead back still, and this class is expected to be extremely deep at the running back position. It may be tempting to take a playmaker like Hampton, but the Texans would be better off addressing another need in the first round and adding a running back later.

Colston Loveland, TE, Michigan

Colston Loveland is another player like Hampton who could be extremely tempting for the Texans to take.

However, like Hampton, the Texans would be wise to avoid temptation and take a more important need than tight end. The Texans still have solid veteran Dalton Schultz at the position, so adding a rookie like Loveland wouldn’t make the most sense.

It’s undeniable that the Texans need pass-catchers, and Loveland is definitely an elite pass-catcher. The team really needs to improve the offensive line, though, and like running back, the tight end class appears to have some solid depth this year.

Luther Burden III, WR, Missouri

One of the biggest needs on the Texans’ roster is the wide receiver position.

It’s unknown when Tank Dell will be healthy again, and veteran Christian Kirk was the most notable addition to the group this offseason. However, that doesn’t mean ANY receiver would be a great fit on the Texans.

Luther Burden III is a polarizing prospect. The receiver is extremely talented and has sure hands, but there are concerns about the Missouri product’s maturity and character.

The Texans need a receiver who can come in and immediately contribute with no drama. Burden might not be the player who fits those characteristics.

Josh Simmons, OL, Ohio State

The Texans desperately need help on the offensive line after shockingly trading star left tackle Laremy Tunsil this offseason.

The team did bring in left tackle Cam Robinson in free agency, though, and the veteran should be a fine stopgap option. Josh Simmons is one of the most talented tackles in this class, but the lineman is coming off a serious injury in 2024 and may not be ready to start immediately.

Instead of taking Simmons, the Texans would be better off taking a guard like Tyler Booker or Grey Zabel who could immediately slot in as a starter on the interior.
